fit to PRINT
Knowledge is a resource and SOUDIO is proud to learn from the expertise of Anda Tanaka, Visiting Assistant Professor of Drawing and Printmaking at St. Olaf College. She has graciously offered research materials in preparation for our upcoming print session, which are detailed below.
“Comprehensive video from image transfer with carbon paper and sketch to printing. A few things to point out:
In the video the artist paints the block with watered down India ink- this is optional and can help to imagine what will be positive/negative space.
The knife-like tool can be used to create guide lines before using a V or C gouge to carve.
This artist uses a book press followed by hand printing. We will be using a traditional etching press when printing at St. Olaf.”

“This video is more in-depth. The first 20 minutes cover the carving process. A few things to point out:
The artist uses a mallet and gouge to remove a lot of surface area at one point- with the blocks we are using, this is probably not necessary.
The artist uses a carving bench, or tool to brace the block and keep it from slipping. You can also place the block on a non-slip surface such as a rubber mat.
The artist mentions that one of her tools is dull- our tools should be fine for this short project, but would need to be sharpened in the future if you want to continue using them.
This video also demonstrates hand printing, but we will be using a press as noted above.”
